Dye-Na-Flow Workshop

To kick off our 2012 - 2013 season CFAC members and friends met at Karen Loprete's home for a workshop using Dye-Na-Flow products. Dye-Na-Flow dyes are premixed and non toxic making them especially user friendly. Karen demonstrated her technique of overlaying silk on cotton to create two distinctive pieces from one process!

The group is listening intently to Karen's discussion on technique!
Left to right we have Carol Vinick, Roz Spann, Diane Wright, Debby Bento
Barb Adams, Cher Hurney and Janine Anderson-Bays.

After lying a silk scarf on top of a piece of cotton Karen mists both fabrics with water.

Next Karen adds Dye-Na-Flow to the silk.
She uses either an eye dropper, sponge brush or mister to apply the dye.

Here you can see how applying dye to the upper layer seeps
into the cotton below creating a secondary design.

The group is eager to get started and create something unique.
Karen's sample pieces are hanging on the line.

Carol Ludington and Carol Vinick get started with
Debby Bento, Toni Torres and Cher Hurney looking on.

Janine Anderson-Bays is focused on her design.

Barb Adams looking on as Debby Bento gives the Dye-Na-Flow a try.

Roz Spann creates a piece with a lot of movement and energy.

Ruth Anne-Olsen goes for the bright colors.

Janine Anderson-Bays piece is migrating and creating a very interesting look.

This is the cotton Toni Torres had placed beneath her silk creating a secondary pattern.

Roz Spann and Diane Wright confer with Carol Eaton's piece hanging to dry.

Birthdays are best celebrated with friends and we have Toni Torres, Barb Adams, Karen Loprete and Carol Vinick all sharing a a fall birthday!

Time to relax after a day of creating!
The group agrees using Dye-Na-Flow products was quick and easy
with the non toxic factor a bonus

Brush Gallery: Artist Reception

We had a lovely time exploring the many artist venues in Lowell, MA. If you haven't visited the city lately you should give it a chance. It's a historical treasure for learning about how the fabric and thread industry got off the ground. There are also a number of gallery's to peruse.

The Brush Art Gallery and Studios was a highlight with an artist reception for the current ART QUILTS LOWELL 2012: Music exhibit. CFAC members Diane Cadrain and Diane Wright had pieces in the show and it was fun to see their work hung in such a nice setting.

All Dried and Pressed

Here are some of the beautiful colors that developed in the fabric after the hand-dyed pieces from last Saturday's workshop were rinsed, washed and pressed. Learning these techniques is already widening my horizons!

Hand Dyeing Workshop

Today we learned to hand dye fabric with Carol Ludington and her ice cube dyeing technique that was featured recently in Quilting Arts magazine.  But we didn't stop there. After we set up our little fabric, ice and dye vats, Carol Eaton showed us her confetti dyeing technique.

What fun! Here are some pictures.

Diane Wright: Brush Gallery 2012 Art Quilt Show

Diane Wright  had her “Musical”inspired piece juried into
the Brush Gallery's 2012 Art Quilt Show.

Diane’s End of Summer piece was inspired by Vivaldi’s Four Seasons: Summer. "Music", specifically a clip from Vivaldi's Four Seasons: Summer, was the first challenge for Viewpoints9, an online group of international participants, testing themselves on how one might be inspired using various modalities.

Congratulations Diane!

Diane Cadrain: Art Quilts Lowell 2012

Diane Cadrain states she is honored her quilt, Thus Spake Zarathustra, has been accepted to the juried show, Art Quilts Lowell 2012, a competition with a music theme.

Her piece imagines the void of space as a place of majesty and mystery, as did the director of the film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, in choosing Thus Spake Zarathustra, by Richard Strauss, to achieve that effect. Please visit the show at the Brush Gallery August 9th - September 15th.

CFAC Takes A Trip to Find Inspiration!

Five members of the Connecticut Fiber Arts Collective gathered at the Bartlett Arboretum in Stamford, CT on Saturday. Our goal was to sketch, take photos and observe the beautiful plants, trees and garden designs. We have an upcoming exhibit titled, Connecticut Landscapes, and I'm sure you'll see some Arboretum plant life in the designs... exhibit information will be forthcoming.

The weather was perfect to be out in the gardens!

Diane and Carol V. are deep in discussion... working through a technique perhaps?!

We hope you will be inspired to create a nature inspired design as well!
